A three-phase motor can receive power and still rotate in the wrong direction. This can happen when the sequence of the three supply phases changes.
For equipment such as pumps, hoists, compressors, machine tools and valve actuators, that change in direction can become a serious operating problem.
This is where a phase sequence relay becomes important.
What Does a Phase Sequence Relay Do?
In a three-phase supply, the phases must arrive in the correct sequence for the connected motor to rotate in the intended direction.
A three-phase sequence relay continuously checks this order. If the sequence is incorrect, the relay can prevent the connected equipment from operating with the wrong phase rotation.
This becomes particularly important after maintenance, rewiring, cable replacement or changes made inside an electrical panel.
Why Can Phase Sequence Reversal Be Risky?
A phase sequence reversal can make a three-phase motor or rotating equipment run in the opposite direction.
For a pump, this may affect expected flow. For a hoist, the movement direction may change. A valve actuator may move opposite to the intended command. Machine tools and other rotating machinery can face similar operating risks.
The supply may be available, but the direction can still be wrong.
Where Is Phase Sequence Protection Useful?
Phase sequence protection is useful wherever the direction of a three-phase motor matters.
Typical applications include hoist motor control, agricultural pump starters, machine tools, valve actuator motors, injection moulding machines and three-phase air-conditioning equipment.
Minilec’s S1 VMR7 Phase Sequence Relay monitors phase sequence and provides automatic reset with a changeover output relay.
What About Negative Phase Sequence?
The term negative phase sequence relay is also searched when engineers study abnormal phase conditions. However, phase-sequence reversal and negative-sequence components are not exactly the same protection question.
For basic direction-sensitive applications, the important starting point is simple: Is the three-phase supply sequence correct before the equipment operates?
Check the Sequence Before the Machine Moves
Phase sequence is a small electrical detail with a direct effect on equipment movement.
Selecting the right phase failure and phase sequence protection can help ensure the machine receives the correct phase order before operation begins.
